Before you can find a cache, you need a map! Have an adult help you download the official Geocaching® app on your smartphone.
Create an Account: Pick a fun "Explorer Name" for your family or classroom.
Find a "Green" Cache: Start with Traditional Caches (the green circles). They are usually the best for beginners!
OR Head over to Geocaching.com and open the map from a computer!
Once you pick a cache, the app will show you exactly where it is hidden.
The Navigation Arrow: Follow the arrow on your screen as it leads you toward the coordinates.
The "20-Foot" Rule: GPS isn't perfect! When the app says you are within 20 feet, put your phone away. It’s time to start using your "Geosenses" to look for the container.
Caches are hidden, but never buried! Look for things that seem a little "unnatural"—like a pile of sticks that looks too perfect or a hollowed-out log.
Think Like a Hider: Where would you hide a small box to keep it out of sight?
Be Stealthy: If there are non-geocachers (we call them "Muggles") nearby, try to be extra quiet so you don't give away the secret location!
You found it! Now comes the most important part of the game.
Sign Your Name: Open the container and sign the paper logbook.
Trade Fairly: If you see a toy or trinket you like, you can take it ONLY IF you leave something of equal or better value behind.
Hide it Back: Close the lid tightly and put the cache back exactly where you found it so the next person can enjoy the hunt.
